Bricks & Brownstone is the new edition of the classic history of the New York row house. First published in 1972, the original book by Charles Lockwood became known as the Brownstone Bible, the authoritative work on the history and architecture of New York's row houses and brownstones. The new edition, by the late Lockwood and co-author Patrick W. Ciccone, traces New York's row houses from colonial days through World War I, examining in detail the Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, and Second Empire architectural styles of the early and mid-nineteenth century, as well as the Neo-Grec, Queen Anne, Romanesque, Renaissance Revival, and Colonial Revival styles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
