Pillar of New York: Richard J. Moylan
I'm honored to be named as a “Pillar of New York” by the Preservation League of New York State. It’s a recognition that my vision for Green-Wood is not mine alone; it’s one that is shared by like-minded individuals across the state. For over 35 years, it’s been my passion to tap into this potential at my favorite place in the world: Green-Wood. It has transformed the cemetery into a public art venue, a leader in historic preservation, a force for protecting the environment, and an important resource to our community. I am honored to have been at the helm through this journey. - Richard J. Moylan
The Preservation League of NYS was thrilled to recognized Richard J. Moylan with a 2024 Pillar of New York Award! Richard J. Moylan has served as President of The Green-Wood Cemetery since 1986, where he has worked for over 50 years. His vision transformed Green-Wood into a cultural center by prioritizing education, arts programming, environmental initiatives, and historic preservation. Under Moylan’s leadership, Green-Wood gained National Historic Landmark status in 2006, and recently embarked on a bold endeavor to create an Education & Welcome Center to better serve its community. Moylan is a recipient of the Fine Arts Federation’s highest honor and the 2016 Place Maker award from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. In the video above, he references earlier recognition from the League including Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards in 2023 for the Bridge to Crafts Careers Program and 2021 for the restoration of Green-Wood’s Historic Chapel.
