R & Company: Reframing the Past, Present, and Future of Design
R & Company is a cutting-edge Tribeca gallery that represents a distinguished group of 20th and 21st century designers, whose work is among the most innovative and finely crafted of their time. The League's Excelsior Society was proud to host a conversation with gallery Co-Founder Zesty Meyers on Thursday, June 10.
Zesty was joined by League Board Chair Frank Sanchis and Excelsior Society Co-Chairs Suzanne Clary and Thomas Jayne for an engaging discussion touching on the restoration of their historic building and their current exhibition OBJECTS: USA 2020. If you missed the live webinar, watch the recording below to learn how Zesty and his colleagues resurrected interest in now-iconic designers Verner Panton, Wendell Castle, and Greta Magnusson — to name a few. He also talks about his passionate commitment to historic preservation, which is embodied in the R & Company archives, library, private collection, and the magnificent gallery space itself. The historic iron-front building is a stunning example of adaptive reuse.
To follow up the webinar, the Excelsior Society hosted an exclusive in-person tour of the gallery on Sunday, June 13. Guests were able to enjoy OBJECTS: USA 2020, a landmark exhibition reframing the past, present, and future of handmade American arts.
OBJECTS: USA 2020 surveys American handmade arts through a curated selection of 100 artists, including 50 of the most impactful contemporary makers working today and 50 historical artists, whose work viewed together is a testament to the diverse, pluralistic, and hybrid state of handmade objects in American culture today.
