Tour Great Camp Santanoni with Steven Engelhart

As we celebrate Steven Engelhart on the eve of his retirement from Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH), we’re feeling grateful that we were able to meet with him to tour Great Camp Santanoni earlier this year. AARCH has been deeply involved in Santanoni’s restoration for decades. Steven has made Santanoni a flagship project for his team. Santanoni is the only publicly-owner Great Camp, and it benefits from a unique public-private partnership between AARCH, the Town of Newcomb, and the Department of Environmental Conservation. This National Historic Landmark, built in 1893, is one of the earliest examples of an Adirondack Great Camp. This magnificent structure and its related outbuildings were nearly lost before AARCH led a campaign to save it. The League has been proud to stand alongside Steven and other preservation advocates over the years to bring Santanoni back to life.

Steven’s work at Great Camp Santanoni is just one example of the profound impact he’s had on the Adirondack region. The League is honored to recognize him with a statewide Excellence in Historic Preservation Award this year.
