League Board Chair Frank Sanchis is being honored by our colleagues at Historic Districts Council with their Landmarks Lion Award! More info.

Each year, the Historic Districts Council honors a special New Yorker who has made a particularly significant contribution to the celebration and preservation of New York City. We are thrilled to announce that on Tuesday November 29, 2022 HDC will present Frank E. Sanchis III with the Landmarks Lion Award at our annual gala. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Frank by becoming a member of the Landmarks Lion Benefit Committee.

Frank is a dedicated preservationist with a career stretching back to the 1960s. He started with a college internship measuring buildings for the Historic American Buildings Survey and was an early staff member for the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, including serving as Executive Director. He served as Vice President of Historic Sites for the National Trust for Historic Preservation and, starting in 1999, was Executive Director of Municipal Art Society. From 2010 he was the Regional Director for North America at the World Monuments Fund, where he was a driving force behind initiatives to safeguard places central to Native American identity and culture. From 1974 to 1985, Frank taught in the Historic Preservation Program at Columbia. He currently serves as chair of the Preservation League of NY State and is also on the boards of The City Club of New York and the Catskill Center.

HDC is proud to honor Frank for his years as a preservation champion at city, state, national, and international levels. He has led the way in the preservation of modern architecture, working with Philip Johnson on the transformation of his Glass House to a museum and fronting a campaign to protect the integrity of Eero Saarinen’s landmarked TWA terminal. He helped create The Lower Manhattan Emergency Preservation Fund and the public art installation, Tribute in Light, which were key pieces in the rebuilding and commemoration of Ground Zero and the World Trade Center area. One of his most recent successes is the creation of a technical training program for underrepresented youth in stone masonry preservation, Bridge to Craft Careers.

Joining the committee will also ensure that HDC is able to continue our valuable work with more than 500 communities and neighborhoods to preserve, protect, and celebrate New York’s historic places.
