Black Poetry Day with Preservation Long Island

Preservation Long Island and Lloyd Harbor Historical Society host a special two-site tour day to celebrate the story of Jupiter Hammon, one of the first published African-American writers.

The FREE tours start at 11:00am, with the final tour at 3:00pm. Tours run every 45 minutes beginning at the Henry Lloyd House and continuing at Joseph Lloyd Manor. Light refreshments will be served at both sites! This is a free event, but capacity is limited. Click here for a details and a link to register.

Jupiter Hammon was born into slavery at Henry Lloyd Manor on October 17, 1711, a date now celebrated as Black Poetry Day. Hammon went on to compose several of his most significant works while later enslaved at Joseph Lloyd Manor.
