Searching for Timbuctoo Filmmaker Discussion and Q&A

Hosted by Adirondack Architectural Heritage | Click here to register

In an effort to level a blow against racism in 1846, wealthy New York landowner and well-known abolitionist leader Gerrit Smith gave away 120,000 acres of land to nearly 3000 African American families so that they could have the right to vote in the State of New York. The settlement of Timbuctoo encompassed land in Essex and Franklin Counties and its deep and powerful story remains under the soil of the Adirondack landscape today.

Join AARCH for a webinar featuring a trailer for the film that documents this story, Searching for Timbuctoo, and a short 20 min presentation, followed by a Q&A, with the film’s director, Paul A. Miller. Searching For Timbuctoo reveals the hidden history of this long-lost community and follows SUNY-Potsdam archaeologist Dr. Hadley Kruczek-Aaron who, since 2009, has tried to unearth the elusive Timbuctoo settlement.

Paul Miller is a writer, filmmaker and photographer based in upstate New York. As a 20-year veteran of broadcast and cable television, he has worked for national shows and networks, including The History Channel, National Geographic Channel, PBS, and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
