This online series is brought to you by the Preservation League of New York State, in partnership with the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions, and is made possible thanks to support from the Community Foundation of South Central New York and the Peggy N. and Roger G. Gerry Charitable Trust. Thank you!
We invite preservation commission members, preservation nonprofit staff and advocates, planners, architects, and other planning and preservation professionals living and/or working in New York State to join us for this special three-part virtual series on ZOOM focused on timely topics including resilience and disaster planning, sustainability upgrades and geothermal energy, and section 106.
Resilience and Disaster Planning
Choose from our downstate and upstate New York programs to explore planning and recovery efforts (not sure which one to attend? Check out our map). However, both programs will be very similar, so you are welcome to attend the program that best suits your schedule and interest. Each program will explore in-depth pre-planning and recovery efforts to aid in the protection of historic buildings.

Residential Geothermal: A Case Study in Photos
Join Dan Becker on a visual journey exploring the installation of a closed-loop geothermal HVAC system at his Raleigh Historic Landmark/National Register-listed residence. This session will explore considerations in heat pump basics, planning a project, well-drilling logistics, thermal envelopes, and performance outcomes. Don’t miss this deeply exciting boring adventure in molecular science and historic preservation!
Section 106 Review
Join Will Cook to explore Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, along with case studies that show successful preservation outcomes using this law as an advocacy tool. With a special emphasis on historic
landscapes and development, we will explore how to use Section 106 to avoid, minimize, and mitigate adverse
effects. This session will also show how to leverage Section 110(f) of the National Historic Preservation Act, which imposes a heightened duty to use all possible planning to minimize harm to properties with a National Historic Landmark designation.
Specialty topic program includes:
AIA | AICP continuing education credits (credit approval pending)
Certificates of completion
